What is Prolotherapy?

Prolotherapy involves injecting a sugar or saline substance into your sore joint or muscle, where it acts as an irritant. It’s thought that your body recognizes the irritant and sends immune cells and other chemicals to the area, which starts your body’s natural healing process. This process is meant to help repair any damaged soft tissue in your joint or muscle area, like nerves, blood vessels, and muscle tissue.

What is PRP?

PRP is a concentration of one type of cell, known as platelets, which circulate through the blood and are critical for blood clotting. Platelets and the liquid plasma portion of the blood contain many factors that are essential for the cell recruitment, multiplication, and specialization that are required for healing.

After a blood sample is obtained from a patient, the blood is put into a centrifuge, which is a tool that separates the blood into its many components. Platelet-rich plasma can then be collected and treated before it is delivered to an injured area of bone or soft tissue, such as a tendon or ligament. PRP is given to patients through an injection, and ultrasound guidance can assist in the precise placement of PRP.

Is PRP Treatment Effective?

Several basic science studies in animal models suggest that PRP treatment can improve healing in soft tissue and bone. These favorable findings in animal models have led to the widespread use of PRP treatment for a variety of conditions, including acute and chronic tendon problems, as well as injuries to ligaments and muscles. Some early-stage clinical studies in humans have been promising. The most promising early results have been seen when PRP treatment is used for chronic tendon conditions, such as lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) and Achilles tendinosis, which impacts the Achilles tendon.

Since PRP is created from a patient's own blood, it is considered a relatively low-risk treatment with the potential to improve or speed healing.

What is Hyaluronic Acid (HA)?

Hyaluronic acid is similar to a naturally occurring substance found in the joints. It works as a lubricant and shock absorber in the joints and helps the joints to work properly.

Hyaluronic acid injections are US FDA-approved for several conditions, including osteoarthritis. It is an effective treatment for osteoarthritis most often used in the knee joint. Injecting hyaluronic acid into the joint can reduce joint pain and stiffness.

The Process

Hyaluronic Acid is administered in the knee through intra-articular injection. Intra-articular injection refers to an injection given directly into the joint capsule.

What is Cellular Therapy?

Cellular Therapy is a form of Regenerative Medicine that aims to help the human body repair, reconstruct, and replace its own tissues and organs to restore healthy, natural function.

Stem cells can make copies of themselves and turn into other types of cells. In adults, a small number of these unspecialized cells lie dormant in many organs and tissues. Stem cells might be a source of renewable tissue for almost any part of the body such as the spine, hips, shoulders, knees, ankles, and other large joints to be strong and fully functional.

The Process

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), which are found mainly in bone marrow and fat, are usually used for these procedures. Is This Treatment Effective?

MSCs stimulate the production of anti-inflammatory proteins and growth factors. From studies, there is evidence that MSCs are safe and can improve pain and function in arthritic joints

Signs of improvement are typically noticeable within the first 6-8 weeks, and mesenchymal stromal cells remain active in the body for up to six months, with symptom improvement between 3-6 months.

Riley Williams III, MD, who directs the Institute for Cartilage Repair at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York City says, “I’m really excited about the prospects for treating very early arthritis and some chronic overuse injuries. [Stem cells] are not going to work for bone-on-bone arthritis, but they are helpful when people are just starting to have some pain and swelling.”

What is Shockwave Therapy or Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technology (EPAT®)?

What is NAD+ IV Infusion?

NAD is a derivative of vitamin B3 (also called niacin), and it is essential for fueling the body’s cells with energy. When the cells are infused with NAD, it increases the body’s levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). In turn, that helps with essential enzymatic processes such as DNA repair and metabolism regulation.

What is Myer's Cocktail IV Vitamin?

What are Trigger Point Injections?

Trigger point injection (TPI) is an alternative option for treating pain in some patients. TPI is a procedure used to treat painful areas of muscle that contain trigger points, or knots of muscle that form when muscles do not relax. Many times, such knots can be felt under the skin. Trigger points may irritate the nerves around them, and cause referred pain, or pain that is felt in another part of the body.

The Process

In the TPI procedure, a health care professional inserts a small needle into the patient's trigger point. The injection contains a local anesthetic or saline and may include a corticosteroid. With the injection, the trigger point is made inactive, and the pain is alleviated. Often, a brief course of treatment will result in sustained relief.

Injections usually take just a few minutes. Several sites may be injected in one visit. If a patient has an allergy to a certain drug, a dry-needle technique (involving no medications) can be used.

What Disorders Can Be Treated?

TPI is used to treat many muscle groups, especially those in the arms, legs, lower back, and neck. In addition, TPI can be used to treat fibromyalgia and tension headaches. The technique is also used to alleviate myofascial pain syndrome (chronic pain involving tissue that surrounds muscle) that does not respond to other treatments. However, the effectiveness of TPI for treating myofascial pain is still under study.
